Design and Construction Phases

The Syracuse University campus includes some 316 buildings that are used in a variety of ways to meet SU's academic, business, and residential needs. Over the next five years, improvements will be made in the network infrastructure that is located inside 209 of these buildings. The building network improvements will fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • buildings requiring total renovation of the inside infrastructure;
  • buildings requiring new network electronics (switches); and
  • buildings requiring new, additional, or upgraded wireless network access points.

Total Renovation: Approximately 88 campus buildings will undergo a total renovation of the inside infrastructure, which will include replacing outdated wiring and network electronic components, rebuilding the telecommunications rooms that house the network equipment, and installing wireless network access points. It is projected that these individual building projects will take from 12 to 18 months from start to finish.

Network Electronics: A program of replacing aging electronic network technologies in campus buildings that do not require extensive rewiring began in the early part of the fall 2006 semester and will continue throughout the five-year project.

Wireless Access: An aggressive program to rebuild and expand AirOrange in residence halls and in campus buildings that do not need extensive rewiring began during the spring 2006 semester and will continue throughout the five-year project. A complete list of current and future AirOrange locations is available on the Web at http://its.syr.edu/connecting/wireless.
